We spent many years at Shopify building platform products, and with Shopify Editions last month in Toronto, it was a great opportunity to see where Shopify is going with their platform.

The new developments announced at Editions that have been the most exciting to us are functions, markets and customers. Abra makes discounts work effortlessly on the storefront, and with the new improvements in Shopify discount functions, we are now able to build for more powerful use cases.

Today we’re announcing two big new additions to Abra that further enhance our powerful features for larger merchants.

Managed Complexity Means More Profitability

You can now target all of Abra’s functions to specific Shopify markets, and you can now create unique discount values for up to 100 collections with our Multi-value discount offer.

What this means for merchants:

  • You can now target discount functions by country (e.g., US, UK, Canada)
  • You can now run a private sale with a single discount code that dynamically adjusts product prices for up to 100 different values

Launching Enhancements Our Biggest Merchants Are Asking For

We have spent most of this year working with large multinational brands. For some, the markets requirement stemmed from a need to sandbox different promotion strategies for different regions, audiences or locations.

With others it was about discounting out-of-stock products for backorders. However, as you would expect, inventory can fluctuate by location and with Abra they were able to personalize the discount based on the inventory of that unique market.

In both cases it’s now a simple setting that is toggled per offer.

Scaling Up Multi-Value Discount Functions to 100 Collections

When we launched our Multi-value discount function, merchants were ecstatic to have the powerful new functionality at their disposal. We started with 5 collections and within weeks we had a merchant that needed to have 20 collections for their sale they were planning. So we had to do some work figuring out how to scale up our function to meet the needs of a more sophisticated catalog.

With some intentional refactoring our function now works with up to 100 collection and discount values, and we are excited to see what merchants can do with it. You can now do a full scale end-of-season sale or the most profit-optimized Black Friday sale you have ever seen – all with a single code and gated to whichever customers you choose.
